A major step forward in reducing environmental impact and optimising waste management: by harnessing the natural decomposition of landfill waste, Hera is producing clean energy to fuel Ravenna’s city buses.
Producing clean energy from landfill waste to power Ravenna’s public transport is not a futuristic ambition, but a concrete reality. This is made possible by the innovative waste treatment facility in Ravenna, a major step forward in reducing environmental impact and optimising waste management.
The project is co-funded by the regional government of Emilia-Romagna and the European Commission, with the aim of highlighting the benefits of green methane:
- it can replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources
- it can be used in the transport sector, helping to meet the 10% biofuel target
- it supports logistical efficiency thanks to the widespread national natural gas network
- it can be integrated with other renewable energy sources
Biomethane is captured through networks within the landfill and transferred to a treatment section where it is purified by removing carbon dioxide and other gases. Once purified, the gas is stored in a tank and it is ready for refuelling operations.
For now, the biomethane produced will be used to fuel the buses operated by Start Romagna, the local public transport company. But this is just the beginning.
For Hera Group, this is the second biomethane plant, following the facility in Sant’Agata Bolognese, which produces green energy through the processing of grass clippings, prunings and organic waste collected separately.
