HOW MUCH IS A CUBIC METRE OF WATER?

A cubic metre (m3) contains 1,000 litres (L) of water which weigh one tonne (1,000 kg). Given that a bathtub typically holds between 100 and 160 litres of water, a cubic metre of water will fill 6-10 bathtubs. If, instead, we consider that taking a shower consumes about 15 litres a minute, a cubic metre of water will provide about 22 three-minute showers.

Hera collects water from various sources: surface water (streams, rivers, lakes), aquifers (generally located on plains) and springs located in hills and mountains.

2018 was not as dry as 2017, enabling a rebalancing of supply sources

In 2018 the Group fed over 423 million cubic metres of water into the water mains, slightly down compared to the 2017 (-0.6%). The mix of supply sources shows a minimal variation. The less dry period in 2018, compared to 2017, has however enabled a greater rebalancing of sources with less use of groundwater (-7.9%) compared to 2017. From a geographical point of view, the relevance of groundwater is lower in the territory of Marche Multiservizi (21%), while it prevails in Triveneto (86%).

The multiutility’s aqueduct recorded network losses of 30.6%, lower than the national average of 41.9% (source: Arera, 2018 Annual Report), thanks to higher investments, constant monitoring and continuous research and experimentation on “smart grids” that are able to record and report any consumption anomalies.

In 2018 aquifer extraction provided 51% of all water. Surface water provided 31%, and springs accounted for 8%.

WATER FED INTO CIVIL MAINS NETWORK BY SOURCE (THOUSANDS OF CUBIC METRES)

  2016 2017 2018
Aquifer 214,514 234,938 216,403
Surface water 168,893 161,773 171,396
Springs 31,109 27,465 34,105
Total 414,156 424,175 421,904
Inter-area exchange 1,216 1,367 1,274
Grand total 415,372 425,542 23,179

The source mix depends on natural water resources and the facilities available in each area. It also depends on water availability at different times of the year. Surface sources are subject to greater quantitative variation over time as rivers, lakes, etc. are affected by several factors.
