HergoAmbiente, the talking bin system

What would a bin say if it could talk?
Probably incredible stories of everyday life. But above all, it could share practical information: where it is, if it has been damaged, and whether it is time to be emptied. It seemed impossible to make our bins “talk.”
But nothing is impossible when you want to provide a useful service to your community.

Thanks to HergoAmbiente, the smart system designed and developed by Hera Group to support waste management (waste collection and street cleaning), we have “tagged” each of the 300,000 bins in our network, giving them a name, surname and voice. This way, we can always receive real-time updates on any information about them, from their location and operational status to the time they were last emptied.

With Hera, bins are not the only things that “talk.” Thanks to dedicated technologies and HergoAmbiente’s cutting-edge information systems, we have assigned a unique identity to all other assets too, including vehicles, ecological stations and plants, to locate them in space, organise the activities related to them over time, and assess the quality of the services provided. 

An extraordinary opportunity serving local communities, HergoAmbiente thinks and works like a network, i.e. a system of interconnected people and devices, capable of managing all the processes that make waste management work: design, planning, operational scheduling, management of reports, field operations, accounting, reporting and… service redesign, because analysing data always allows us to define and achieve new customised objectives. And what’s our goal?

To improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of services for the community, optimising resources and ensuring real-time traceability of collected waste.

  • Knowing and keeping updated the number, location and status of bins across the areas we cover, for example to know if they have already been emptied and when
  • Continuously improving the design and operational planning of services
  • Accurately tracking waste collection and street cleaning activities
  • Quickly and flexibly organising the workforce employed
  • Ensuring timely handling of information sent from the field at the end of shifts by Hera operators and contractors entrusted with part of the services
  • Determining precisely the productivity of a waste collection centre, a drop-off point or even of a single bin
  • Increasing the efficiency of bulky waste collection services
  • Integrating the information flow from call centres and apps like “Il Rifiutologo”, translating them into corresponding services to be performed
  • Producing targeted reports to enable detailed service analysis, promoting transparency towards citizens and institutions
