“Tracking waste”- Hera Group’s report on the path of separate waste collection valuing the citizens’ daily efforts - has reached its 13th edition, presenting data for 2021.
In 2021, separate waste collection in the area served by Hera Group stands at 65.3%, with 91% of waste sent to recovery. The waste path starts with 61 plants receiving the collected materials and ends with 164 plants that bring them back into the production cycle - 136 of which are dedicated to material recycling. Such circular economy employs 18 thousand workers and invoices 16 billion euros per year. As for the 91% of differentiated waste destined for recovery, 84% has been recycled while 7% has been converted into energy.
These are excellent results: in fact, key European targets related to circular economy have already been met or even exceeded well in advance. In 2021, the overall waste recycling rate – both sorted and unsorted – reached 57%, which anticipates and exceeds the 55% European target for 2025. The packaging recycling rate reached 68%, also exceeding four years in advance the 65% target set by Brussels.
