Recovery of vegetable oils

Vegetable oils are collected in Hera's service area with roadside collection containers and at shopping centres, schools, etc., or at drop-off points.

In 2019, the Group collected about 1,234 tonnes of vegetable oil, an increase of over 18% compared to 2018, amounting to 0.39 kilograms per capita.

The first destination of the vegetable oil collected by Hera

The Hera Group sends vegetable oil to three main initial processing facilities for initial processing that removes foreign materials in preparation for subsequent delivery to recovery plants that produce biofuels or lubricants.

The 3 initial processing facilities for vegetable oil are listed below in descending order of quantity received:

  • Gatti Srl (Castelnuovo Rangone (MO))
  • Venturi Bruno Srl (Anzola dell’Emilia (BO))
  • Tras-eco S.r.l. (Ceggia (VE))

The biofuels project

In January 2019, Hera implemented a circular economy framework agreement with ENI under which the oil processed in the main initial processing facility in Emilia-Romagna that was awarded the contract to process the vegetable oil collected by Hera, is sold to ENI, which uses it to produce green diesel fuel for the same value as the oil sold. Since January 2019, the resulting Eni Green diesel plus diesel fuel has been used to power about 25 compactors used by the waste collection plant in Modena. The biodiesel that Hera will contribute to producing will contain a greater percentage of vegetable oil than required by regulations: 8% in 2019 and 9% in 2020.

Compared to traditional diesel fuel, in fact, Eni Green diesel+ has a renewable component that reduces polluting emissions by up to 40%, enables consumption savings of about 4%, and reduces engine maintenance costs.

The waste oil that becomes biofuel with an advanced environmental footprint and is reused for waste collection is a perfect example of a circular economy.

How we recover vegetable oil

In 2019, the waste collected by Hera classified as UCO (Used Cooking Oil) was delivered to Gatti Srl, the winner of the tender for processing vegetable oil, and processed into an end of waste product called RUCO (Regenerated Used Cooking Oil), and then delivered on behalf of Hera to the plants of ENI's Green Refinery in Porto Marghera, to be processed into Eni Green Diesel+ with the product characteristics described above.

Of the 933 tonnes of vegetable oil delivered by Hera Spa to Gatti's initial separation and processing plant, 86% is recovered and transformed into product (RUCO) ready to be transformed into biodiesel +. The residual part, about 14%, is the processing waste of vegetable oil, consisting mainly of plastic bottles and other foreign fractions which in turn are sent to energy recovery to the extent of 8% and disposal for 6%.
