Sustainable Management Of Water Resources

Hera's commitments for the circularity and reuse of water and to respond to the UN’s call to action

The scenario

  • +55%: global freshwater demand growth expected between 2010 and 2050 (FAO)
  • 87 meteo-hydrogeological emergencies declared in Italy from 2013 to 2019 (26% in Hera’s service areas) (Civil Protection agency)
  • 10: the Italian Regions that in August 2017 were ready to declare the state of calamity due to drought (Sole 24 Ore)
  • 428 litres per inhabitant per day of drinking water withdrawn from the environment in Italy, the highest figure in the EU (Istat)

Hera's commitments

  • target of reducing domestic water consumption by 10% in 2022 compared to 2017 (134,000 cubic meters, equal to the consumption of 1,000 households)
  • launch of water management initiatives to identify water-saving interventions inside and outside the company
  • reuse of the water purified by the Bologna purification plant (about 500 thousand cubic metres of water). Other interventions planned in Bologna, Cesena, Modena, Sassuolo and Savignano sul Panaro
  • collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to draft the water white paper on the circularity of water use
  • new water consumption diary for monitoring consumption over time compared with that of similar and virtuous customers (In the planning phase)

As part of the Global Compact, Hera has joined the CEO Water Mandate, the United Nations Global Compact initiative promoted to boost companies' commitment to sustainable water management.
