Purified water is fed into the water mains and, via water balancing tanks and pumping stations, flows to the users' taps. Along the distribution network (which generally follows main roads) there are so-called “in line” plants that regulate operating pressure and/or disinfection coverage. From here, further pipes branch out to feed the piping in customers' buildings.
Water towers/tanks ensure continuity of service ad render the quantity introduced into the mains and the quantity drawn by customers partially independent of each other. They also ensure reserves in the event of any plant failures.
