A data analysis system to improve the design of waste collection services, focusing on on-demand.

In 2018, several data analytics tools were integrated within Hergo Ambiente's system. Waste management services, therefore, become part of the IoT world (Internet of Things), characterized by the production and resulting analysis of the system's Big Data.

These tools are part of corporate Data Management and have involved, besides the consolidation of the system by adding performance indicators that apply also to the waste collection centres, engineering predictive analysis tools, aimed at generating comparative benchmarks and changing service logistics.

Particular attention is dedicated to developing operations research tools aimed at improving the design of collection services that can be used to rapidly define logistics scenarios and understand the related economic benefits.

In 2018, we refined the analyses of the filling degree of collection containers in an attempt to understand the dynamism of the service with a view implement on-demand collection. The experiment extended the use of volume sensors based on signal concentrators (LoraWAN) from the Ferrara area (the first pilot project) to Abano Terme and Trieste.

The data we collected helped us understand the filling dynamics of containers throughout the service areas, in particular for paper, plastic and glass. The same mathematical models can be used for targeted analysis of non-separated collection, if there is a bin opening system with defined volume and user identification, to efficiently manage operations.
