Bioplastic from sugars

Collaborative projects for the production of 100% biodegradable plastic, using the sugars contained in the wood as raw material.

In 2018, collaboration began with Bio-on, a world leader in the production of bioplastics. The projects planned also include PHA-CELL, which aims to produce Pha, a bioplastic which is 100% biodegradable, using the sugars contained in lignocellulosic biomass as the raw material. These sugars are present in all types of wood, but are difficult to use as they are linked in complex structures such as cellulose and hemicellulose. Through appropriate treatments that involve the use of heat and particular enzymes, it is possible to "break down" these structures and release the sugars that can then be used in the bioplastic production process.

The project came from the desire of Hera group to obtain high value products in the future using the organic waste it collects in the area. These organic waste products also include grass cuttings and garden waster, which could be used in the PHA-CELL process.
