The commitment to research: the "emerging pollutants" case

The Hera laboratories, in collaboration with important research institutes, are at the forefront in Europe in the research on so-called "emerging pollutants", that is those coming from production processes and from the use of cosmetics, drugs and other products of daily use and that they can interfere with the normal functioning of the human hormonal system and other living organisms.

In this perspective, the last significant investment involved the purchase of an HPLC / mass-mass, which made it possible to increase sensitivity by 1,000 times compared to the previous instrumentation, dated 2007, reaching very low quantification limits (nanograms per liter).

For natural waters, direct injection of the samples in aqueous phase is carried out with the sole treatment on 0.22 µm porosity filters. It is thus possible to reduce the sampling volumes the use of consumables such as solvents and plastic containers, saving on costs and with undoubted environmental advantages and for the safety of the operators. Furthermore, the elimination of the preparatory phase of the samples significantly reduces the time required for carrying out the analyzes. The parameters already determined with this new instrumentation are shown below, but the list is constantly updated:

  • Perfluorinated organic compounds
  • Glifosate, AMPA and glufosinate
  • Endocrine instructors
  • Haloacetic compounds
  • Microcistina
  • Atrazine and its derivatives
  • Multiresidual analysis of pesticides
