Kerbside collection of cooking oils

What is it?

  • Smart kerbside container for used cooking oils with a display indicating the container level.

How does it work?

  • The public can deposit oil in plastic bottles to avoid possible spillages, which would spoil the outside of the container. Once transferred to the recycling plant, the contents are separated in such a way that they can be reused, depending on their characteristics. For cooking oil, treatment and recycling will consist mainly of energy conversion of the material (electricity and heat), after refining in a special pilot plant.á

Where is it?

  • The containers will be placed in supermarket and shopping centre car parks. Some will be fitted with a user identification system so that a reward scheme can be introduced.
Since October 2013, containers have been placed in Modena, Sassuolo and Formigine for the Modena area; in the Romagna area they are already present in the towns of Ravenna, Cervia, Cesenatico and Rimini.
The towns of Ferrara and Imola are expected to come on-stream in November, while the scheme will continue to be rolled out to all major towns covered by the Hera Group.
