TRIAL OF ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SYSTEMS

"The era of electric mobility in Emilia-Romagna": the electric mobility project is launched

Territories involved: Modena and Imola, Number of charging stations within 2011: 20, Electric vehicles involved belonging Hera Group: 95

Another step forward in the development of electric mobility in Emilia-Romagna. The Region is clinching an agreement with the Hera Group (following the signing, in December 2010, of the memorandum of understanding with Enel and the Municipalities of Bologna, Reggio Emilia and Rimini), and widening the network of municipalities (with the entry of Modena and Imola) involved in the “Mi Muovo elettrico” [“I Travel Electric”] initiative. The programme called “The era of electric mobility in Emilia-Romagna” involves two pilot projects, one for the Municipality of Imola and the other for the Municipality of Modena, based on the development of innovative infrastructures for charging electric vehicles used for carrying people and goods, to be installed on both public and private sites.

Starting in summer 2011, Hera S.p.A. will begin by installing 10 public charging stations in each municipality, to serve a fleet of electric vehicles that is already quite well developed, thanks mainly to the 100 or so vehicles used by the Hera Group and partner businesses. The trial will last until the end of 2015 and provides for the installation of many more private terminals on the sites of supporter businesses, which will purchase at least one electric vehicle. In addition, with the second phase of the project, following an evaluation of the energy output of the charging stations, other public terminals may be installed, the locations of which have already been identified.

The project will therefore be aimed at the business world, with a particular focus on the circulation of light goods around town and travel by employees between different regional sites and to their place of work (commuting).

A main axis for electric vehicles is thus rapidly being created for drivers who normally travel along the Via Emilia, thanks to Italy's first region-wide project and the collaboration between HERA Group and Enel. Sharing the same charging technology and using common charging-station-management systems, the two companies will provide electric-car owners with recharging points approximately every 30 km along the route from Reggio Emilia to Rimini.

1st PHASE

In the first phase, the 10 public charging stations will be installed once the design has been completed and the relevant authorisations obtained. This is expected to happen by the end of 2011.

» Modena   » Imola

2nd PHASE

Once the trial has started,a further 10 public stations may be installed according to the actual use of the charging stations.
