In the environment sector Hera Group oversees the entire waste management cycle through operational environmental services (waste collection, street sweeping and cleaning) and waste treatment (recycling and disposal), enabling it to cover its territory in a completely self-sufficient manner.
Segregated and non-segregated collection of municipal solid waste and waste treated as such is carried out on behalf of over 2.7 million residents in the provinces of Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì Cesena, Rimini, Florence and Pesaro-Urbino.

Hera Group also engages in the collection of special waste deriving from industrial, commercial and tertiary activities which cannot be treated as municipal waste for reasons tied to quality or quality, the treatment and recycling of municipal solid and special waste, liquid waste and sludge and landfill disposal of non-recyclable waste.

This whole range of activities is aimed at recovering materials to be redeployed in production processes, producing electric or thermal energy and reducing the hazardousness of waste destined for landfill disposal.

Part of the waste is subjected to a waste-to-energy treatment - a process enabling waste to be disposed of and electric and thermal energy to be produced at the same time - in its plants in Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Ravenna and Rimini.

The company also operates facilities for composting, a process in which the biodegradable organic fractions of waste are broken down by aerobic digestion, at a faster rate than normally occurs in nature.
